I just wanted to say Happy Birthday

tell g-paw i said hi and I remember him
after what turned out to be a very tough week, i ran away to Anza Borrego with Marie and Heather, which turned out to be just what the doctor ordered. Late night swimming, beer, delicate desert plants, night birds, bunnies, wild turkeys, photos in ruins of cabanas, room 9, wireless internet service in the middle of nowhere, Carlee's bar, seventeen billion stars at midnight, the desert light at 6 am
maybe everything that dies someday comes back
It's over. I interviewed yesterday, after hours of planning, hand wringing, teeth clenching, suit buying. I think it went allright. the best part was getting back to my car and seeing all the missed calls on my cell phone, and then driving up to Peet's to relax with Marila and Topher and Shawna.
It's over.
Now to be nervous for the marathon.
So, yeah, I ran 21 miles on Sat.
OK. not really. Define "running."
I ran about 10, shuffled another, I don't know, five? and then seriously walked the rest.
I'm a little bummed that I didn't do better but I was relieved that my running friends were much the same. I'm having problems with hip tightness which then turns into knee tighness, which then becomes overall stiffness. When I walk, it all feels fine. When I try to run again--oh, the tightness and the stiffness.
My game plan is this:
stretch like crazy the next few weeks. many many pigeon poses! Hip flexors: look out!
Hydrate like mad two days before the marathon
get really warmed up on race day
visualize running with no hip problems
shoot for total mileage (18?) running and then just walk. And be OK with it.
And although Saturday was brutal, the good news is that I am remarkably not sore today. I recovered fast. yay!
I'm holding my favorite beer: Stone! Brewed in SD!
I was painting my fingernails cherry red today, when I flashed back to childhood. I remember being in my grandma's side yard in Concord looking at her red fingers and I wondered why I couldn't have red polish like she did. My mom had a no-red- nails-on- little-girls policy. I always think of Lena as thinking of herself as plain, so the thought that she painted her nails red is nice to me, as if she allowed herself that indulgence in vanity.
I saw my first Jacaranda blooms today in all their purple loveliness!
I am watching Texas Ranch House on PBS and I am FASCINATED by the latent sexism in the men of the group. They are so dismissive of the women on the ranch, and so sure of their own entitlement. They are currently in an uproar over a woman who wants to ride as a cowgirl. The women on the show have upbraided the men several times. Wow. It's actually really fun to watch, because it's so weird.
Oh my God, one man just called the Comanche who stole thier horses "terrorists."
Endlessly entertaining!
The personalities really come out in this one.
