From Angels in America: How do people change?

Mormon Mother: Well it has something to do with God so it's not very nice. God splits the skin with a jagged thumbnail from throat to belly and then plunges a huge filthy hand in, he grabs hold of your bloody tubes and they slip to evade his grasp but he squeezes hard, he insists, he pulls and pulls till all your innards are yanked out and the pain! We can't even talk about that. And then he stuffs them back, dirty, tangled and torn. It's up to you to do the stitching.

Harper: And then get up. And walk around.

Mormon Mother: Just mangled guts pretending.

Should I get a more interesting life?

Every day I drink a large cup of tea in the morning. If I'm going to school, I make a cup of Assam Golden Tip (Peet's, natch) in my Nissan tumbler. About 12-16 ounces of creamy Assam goodness. Yum.
So yesterday I went to make said cuppa, and when I poured out the contents of my Nissan to clean it and start new, the leftover tea was chunky and gross, as often happens. i think this is some soy milk related issue. I rinsed out my cup and smelled it--ew. i scrubbed it with soap and smelled it--not pleasant. So I threw a little Oxyclean in there, some hot water, and let it soak overnight.
And this morning when I woke up, much to my delight there was a thick scum floating on the top of the water. Cool! I love gross stuff! I poured it out and my Nissan was sparkling clean and had no funky stench. All the brown crud that clung to the sides and bottom of the cup? magically gone! magically delicious!
And now I want to Oxyclean EVERYTHING in my life. Especially my thoughts.

Cinemax! HBO!

At one point in our household, we had Cinemax and HBO. I think we might have had the pirated version because i can NOT imagine my parents paying for such luxuries in those days. (Until Steve was born, of course; he got everything. hee!) One summer i must have watched the Franco Zeffrelli version of Romeo and Juliet a thousand times. I knew every moment. ("Dagger, here is thy sheath!") I loved Olivia Hussey's husky voice and long hair (although now I realize she wasn't much of a cryer, see Claire Danes for that) And Leonard Whiting as Romeo? You could do worse in the hip and butt department. Lots of eye candy in this one. So I watched it tonight, lo, these many years hence, and it was good. And I did cry copiously.
I really liked this line that the Prince said at the end.

See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love.

Don't get me started on the speculum.

Recently, I was at the gynocologist (I just lost my 2 readers) and I have a thought. When you put your feet into the stirrups to be examined, the metal loops to hold your feet are often covered with potholders.
Yeah. Potholders. Oven mitts. The kind with little flowers on a yellow background or dancing jalapenos or whatever. Something about that makes me really pissed off.
Would it be so hard to invent an exam chair that was actually comfortable for the woman? It's kind of like when I see old people with walkers that have two tennis balls split open and attached to the front feet. This is a design flaw. Someone please FIX IT and let old people know that they matter! we care about them! They no longer have to jerry-rig their walkers.
My feet in little flowery potholders while my insides are being prodded; I mean it's just weird.

The McGhees

Oldmcghees2, originally uploaded by McTrix.

I was thinking about how old photos someday become meaningless because no one knows who's in them. These photos could end up in a thrift store some day, and someone could pick them up and wonder who these people were and where they were and what they were like.
Life is weird, to use Olivia's new catchword.

weeeee!

application:done!
that was many hours of hunched stressedness.
last night: wine bar, a circle of friends that kept growing and growing. I had just enough wine, and not too much. I laughed a lot and saw Jyl, who I haven't seen in ages, Cindy, who wants to start working "holla!" into her professional conversations, and sara, her friend who has twins! and came out anyway! Also, the Borje were there and Jorge shaved his head and I got to rub it.
All in all, a successful night.
yay!

Spring Suck

So far Spring Break has not been very breaky. There's been much grading, a grueling 16 mile run (ow, my hip,ow) and semi-frantic work on a job application.
So tonight I went for a wee run, a fun run if you will, and got a ittle lost in Balboa Park, which is hilarious because it's the smallest park ever. Anywhoodle, the thing I want to say is that I discovered a meadow! A memorial grove, actually, that is ringed by fanciful Seuss trees and was lit by a gorgeous rising moon and a blue-pink sky and there was a (lesbian) couple being lovey in the distance and I got really happy.
Spring Break!

Is hope the enemy?

I wonder if hope is sometimes just a disguise for denial.

Jesus Loves Porn Stars

Interesting article in the LA Times. ( I heart the LA Times) These young Christian-y dudes wanted to make Bibles with a retro cover that says "Jesus Loves Porn Stars" to hand out at a porn convention, but the bible manufacturer refused to do it.
I think it's kind of fabulous and forward thinking of the Christian rockers to embrace the Mary Magdalene side of Jesus' love. The man hung with prostitutes, after all. I'm not a big fan of evangalizing, but this is some interesting stuff. Of course, the conservative branch of Christianity hates it. So, that also pleases me. Hee!

Mmmmmmm, Tony Leung.

Last night I watched "In the Mood for Love" a moody kind of non-romance set in Hong kong in the 1960's. And boy, do I love me some Tony Leung. That man looks good with Crisco in his hair and a skinny tie.
Maggie Cheung ain't half bad either, with her swan-body. And God knows I love a story of unrequited lust.
