off to see the wizard

after a hectic week of moving into a smaller (but better) apartment, causing the need to sort and donate older clothes and furniture, then attempting to pack a subset of the remaining, scattered clothes into tiny, travel-sized suitcases, and a final drive down to redlands for a few final californian days, we're finally ready to go.

we're leaving today at 5pm (thats 1700 hours on the itinerary, of course) and will land in london at noon tomorrow (london time). after that we're going to rome, then train to tuscany to stay for 2 weeks. then is a train ride to paris, then to nimes (france), then a flight back to london, another train ride up to scotland and back again, then we're back on the 27th or so of july. gonna be awesome.

yesterday, andria and i went to barnes & nobles to get a journal, we ended up getting several small journals (moleskine style) and way too many paperbacks. we should be set when it comes to reading material. (note: b&n sells classic novels for way cheap. like $5 per paperback).

ill try to post from time to time during the trip, maybe even put up some pics. but for now, it looks like everything is going in the journal. maybe ill summarize it for an online writeup.

gmail accounts

ive got a few available. i made a post at gmailforthetroops.com but if anyone else wants, let me know.

the best part, one of the troops in the photo collage at the top of the site is my friend shasta's brother. that photo is in a frame above their TV. (he's the one in the middle-left image, looking off to the left) pretty dang cool.

bici bella

rode Monte Bello (in Palo Alto, CA) with Brian over the weekend. awesome. he kicked my butt to the curb (well, no curbs, maybe to the trailside) and back again. if you look at the graph, you can see we had fun going downhill, then it was a giant climb for over an hour (ok, some drops, but not much). note the drops in heart rate in the middle of the climbs. thats when i wussed out and had to stop cause i was gonna puke. to be fair (to me), i think we were going pretty damn fast, i mean i held 170bpm for 1.5 hours. thats pretty rough. anyways, enough whining. it was a great time, i really enjoyed riding a real trail with someone who can really push me (i hope i pushed back a bit too).

andria and i were up there for Karen's (Brian's fiancee) bridal shower. andria hung with the girls and did whatever it is they do, and brian and i went and got dirty and tried to kill each other.. what guys do.

note: the above graph is missing about 10 minutes off the beginning. so there was more downhill than you see there. which was nice.

more from X

a followup to last week's column, Robert X Cringley tells us what's happened in this last (first?) week of micro-wISPs.

while it's not that exciting, i do like the quote at the end:

I credit Napster (the original Napster, not the new one) and DivX for this relatively sudden willingness for average people to get their hands dirty twiddling bits. Motivated by free music and video, millions of people have learned that it isn't really that hard to do, especially if there is a 12 year-old available to help. And since we seem to keep producing 12 year-olds, I'd say the sky's the limit when it comes to how these technologies will change our world.
