Finally, a weeks vacation. A few days skiing in Tahoe and then a Super Bowl party. Sounds like fun. Not gonna write much today, gotta write a grant for a project. What a fun way to start the vacation.
Had dinner with 2 guys that want me to join their practice. Very interesting deal. The start pay is all based on the # of patients I see, but prob mor like 90,000 then 120,000. The good news is that the guy there 3 years is making more than double that. So the potential is huge.
Do I wanna stay a while in Vegas? Tis the question.
That's a quote from the old star trek for those interested. Started a neurology rotation this month. Diagnosed a kid with Tourette's today, along with other interesting things like Myasthenia gravis and Retts syndrome. Weird wild stuff as Johnny Carson used to say. Making travel plans for the summer! Off to Italy!
Other than that, it's cold here, and life is somewhat back to normal.
So I survived the new year party in downtown Las Vegas. Lots of cops and fewer partiers than I originally expected, but we had a good time regardless. Went to work the next morning for a 24 hour shift (ouch!) Never sat down til 2 am the next morning. The saddest thing happened to one of my patients. There was a fire in his house on New Years eve night and he ran outside like he was supposed to, but no one else did. His mom, dad, brother and his friend all died in the fire. So we observed him overnight and sent him home with grandpa. Everyone sho went into the room came out crying. As he left he said to his nurse " I think my brothers teacher will be sad because he was a really good student." She smiled, then turned away and broke into tears.
My job was just to get social work involved for guardianship issues. I felt so useless standing with grandpa and having absolutely nothing to offer. His life was destroyed in an instant by fire. There was no bad guy to point at and blame. His family was gone and that was it. I wish that young 5 year old boy all the strength in the world as he tries to comprehend why his family is gone. I hope that grandpa can help him thru it.
